Gadding around Glenelg

Had a nice few leisurely hours this morning while the MH had her service then we scooted out to West Beach at Adelaide Shores just north of Glenelg. Very nice area! Just 20 minutes to the CBD, a beach out the front and two 18 hole golf courses out the back! Surrounded! :)

OK! :)

Took the 10 minute bus ride into Glenelg to have a wander around this lovely suburb of Adelaide which has the reputation of being Adelaide's favourite beach and loved for being vibrant and cosmopolitan.   Glenelg certainly has the "people pulse" (saw that written and liked the term) - she was buzzing today with locals and tourists trawling the shops and boutiques along Jetty Road, catching a coffee in Moseley Square and strolling the esplanade enjoying the beach and ocean views. We joined in!

The suburbs name?.......................

Established in 1836, it is the oldest European settlement on mainland South Australia (the oldest being Kingscote on Kangaroo Island), with the proclamation of the colony of South Australia. It was named after Lord Glenelg, a member of British Cabinet and Secretary of State for War and the Colonies.

Through Lord Glenelg the name derives from Glenelg, Highland (previously Inverness-shire), Scotland. In Scottish Gaelic the name is Gleann Eilg. The name Glenelg is noteworthy for being a palindrome.

The Founders Monument
Glenelg is important historically as this is where early settlers came ashore in 1836 to survey and establish Adelaide

Streets in Glenelg and in Adelaide CBD are named after these Founders

Did our exercise and walked the 6kms back to West Beach via Marina Pier and the lovely
walking /cycling path along the Patawalonga waterway into which the Sturt River runs before it pours into Holdfast Bay in Gulf St Vincent.

Lovely heritage homes and terraces abound in Glenelg!
