Bowled over - McKenzie falls!

No one fell over - just forgot the capital letter!  Todays' adventure and hiking took us to McKenzie Falls and Lookout (MacKenzie - spelt both ways on the signs in the Grampian National Park! - to please all no doubt! :) ); Broken Falls Lookout; Reeds Lookout; and The Balconies. The scenery does "bowl you over"!

OUR HAPPY HOUR VISITORS YESTERDAY EVENING

This cheeky young chap thought he'd pinch Pete's cracker but he didn't realise when he swooped down
that there was glass between him and the cracker!
Didn't hurt himself but got a bit of a surprise - so did Pete! :)
The pink and grey Galahs
A paddock full of sulphur crested cockatoos - no wonder they were sacred to the
aboriginals in Gariwerd(the Grampians ) -
there are so many of them -  they called them "brambuk"

The green parrots also joined in!
Brilliant blue and red on their heads and undersides!
Pete went up to the BBQ area to cook our salmon in foil for dinner
and there were 26 Eastern Grey kangaroos enjoying a nibble in the grassed areas around the
Camp Kitchen!

What you cooking Pete???
We think this is the big boss!!! - he kept a strict eye on the proceedings!

MCKENZIE FALLS

Regarded as the most popular spot in the Grampians and the most photographed waterfall - it usually appears in the travel ads for the area.

Lots to see and do in the Park!

Lots of Kangaroo Tail or Grass Trees in his area of  the forest

The walk to the Falls Lookout was lovely, though Mother Nature had shown her wrath again -
18 months ago  fire whipped through the Park causing much destruction,
or was she having a clean up and a regenerate!?

Viewing the Falls from the Lookout

It was a long way down there
Those boulders straddling the river look like pebbles - they were huge and great
stepping stones to get to the other side for a great view of these spectacular Falls.
Falls on the move! Interesting!

The Falls and Gorge
Can you spy Pete way down there in the Gorge at the bottom of the Falls?
Lovely hike but lots and lots of steps!!!
Here I go....down, down, down......

How the Falls got its name -

Major Mitchell was a busy man exploring all this area  -  it must have been so difficul!!!-
got to admire the early explorers!!!

So beautiful! I was being showered by the light mist of spray floating across the water.
Looks like it is a delicate veil of water but it was deceptive!

You can get a better idea of how big these Falls are by comparing it with the people
on the stairs  beside the Falls.

Contrasts of colour and textures! Stunning!
More cheeky kookaburras - they were taking a keen interest in a family having a picnic
on the rocks in the Gorge at the base of the Falls

Us  :)

One kookaburra swooped down and pinched the little boys sandwich!!!
 BROKEN FALLS

REEDS LOOKOUT

Breathtaking views of Victoria Valley and Range, as well as the Serra Range

Spectacular sight with clouds rolling in up the valley
Lake Wartook and the Mount Difficult Range

THE BALCONIES
More amazing sculptures from Mother Nature.
One of the other most photographed spots in the Grampians
Panoramic views into the magnificent Victoria Valley

Another lovely bush walk with spectacular views, plants, trees, wildflowers, mosses, lichens and rocks
along the way!

Nature's rock piles and sculptures,
and human rock piles and sculptures!!!

Rock piles were part of the Northern American Indian Tribal ceremonies;
and did you know rock balancing is also a form of art!

Rock balancing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lots of art work here to complement Mother Nature's work

There is even one balancing on a tree branch!

The pretty Stringybark forest lines the path-
naturally you can rest on the way!! or sit and contemplate !!
Rusty red lichen coloured the trunks of some of the trees
My artistic work displayed on the path to The Balconies :)
I liked the background of the moss covered rock
Recovery time!
Nice to have a rest and some nourishment in between hikes!!
The girls came for a visit as soon as we got home!

Having a squabble over the dried rolled oats Pete gave them.
Couldn't believe the deep guttural sound they make when they are angry or chastising!
Think the crouching down is a sign of submission -"Ok you have them boss!"
