Wow! The Texas Hill Country!

The Texas Hill County has a lot of history and character and it is beautiful! The rolling hills are scattered with every shade of green vegetation, but apparently they haven't had much rain this year so the wild flowers which are usually abundant at the moment haven't stirred yet this spring. Sad for us! Would have been lovely to see them. There are a lot of  prosperous looking cattle, sheep and goat ranches in the area.
We even have a paddock full of antelope behind us here in the Fredericksburg KOA where we are camping tonight. Pecans, peaches and wineries are the other big things in the area.

This morning we looked around Kerrsville and this afternoon we explored Fredericksburg and surrounds -  two of the early western frontier settlements of the mid 19th century.

Fredericksburg was established by German immigrants and many of their descendants still live and operate businesses here today. The German influence is very evident in the town with its architecture and cuisine. We had a delicious German meal at the Fredericksburg Brewing Company this evening - pork schnitzel, warm German potato salad and sauerkraut.

As the plaque says in town:

"Settling Fredericksburg Texas can be credited to one man whose vision, tenacity and courage made it possible.  That man was John Meusebach who founded Fredericksburg and opened up the Texas frontier to settlement."

Kerrsville was an important western frontier town post Civil War.

Many of the original buildings are built out of limestone cut from local quarries.

Admiral Chester Nimitz was the Commander of the Pacific Fleet in WWII
and was born and raised in Fredericksburg.
The museum was built and is run by his Foundation.
The Vereins Kirche.
It was soon built after the German settlers arrived and was the first public building
in the town and served as a  town hall, school, fort, and a church for all denominations.
The Pioneer Memorial Library.

Admiral Nimitz bithplace.
The Fredericksburg Brewing Company.
The day was ver very hot so a cold German beer (Helles)
