The changing face of inner city Sydney

November, 2011

We were amazed at the new face many inner city suburbs have taken on as inner city living has become popular again. We thoroughly enjoyed a walk around Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Woolloomooloo, Paddington, and Kings Cross. It was good to see the beautiful old terrace homes taking on new lives and the historic architecture being preserved in the buildings. The cafe culture, designer shops and boutiques are thriving in the area. Julie says Clover Moore is responsible for the fantastic make-over that is occurring in these charming suburbs streets, parks and gardens.

Famous Sydney hospital - St Vincent's.
Good they preserved the original building below.
They now stand side by side.
The older section of the hospital - great architecture!
The Victor Chang memorial stands proudly Green Park opposite St Vincent's.
Dr Chang's pioneering work in heart transplants made him and
St Vincent's famous.
This great man was tragically murdered.

An icon in Darlinghurst.

Hugo's
Another popular inner city bar and pizza restaurant in Kings Cross / Darlinghurst.
How nice are the terrace houses in these leafy streets!
Great ambience!
The Main Street of Kings Cross.
Famous Aussie poet Kenneth Slessor's opinion of the Cross .

The sidewalk plaques bring the history of the Cross to life -
a great idea and makes the walk really interesting.
Included a few of many.................

An old dingy alley way in the Cross takes on a new exciting life!
The iconic King's Cross  El Alamein Fountain.

Good to see that the original architecture has been preserved in  the
buildings.

Saw "Hair" at The Metro
My first musical! Quite an eyeopener!
Love the 50's architecture!
Lots of great Cafe's and Deli's in these lovely suburbs .

Lots of lovely homes and gardens to enjoy!

The old and new combined in this renovation.
All the streets are leafy and many of the trees are in their 100's or more -
I'm referring to their age!
Good idea for the top of a car park! - a garden area overlooking Woolloomooloo
and the Harbour to be enjoyed by the locals!

Lovely original lacework!

Interesting businesses!

These laneways between the terraces hark back to an earlier era when the horse and buggy
had to be put into the stables behind the terrace house.
The city skyline from Woolloomooloo.

An old guesthouse turned into apartments.
The original 1910 Fire Station in Darlinghurst is still operational
The retained tiled entrance adds Retro charm to the building.
The old gaol behind the  Darlinghurst Court is now an
Art School.
The students had their art works on display.
We met the artist below and chatted to her about her art work and inspiration.
The art school's patron, Carla Zampatti, is interested in buying her work.

The entrance to the old gaol/Art School
The impressive Courthouse

The Courthouse stands on Taylor Square

Good to see separate designated bike paths around the inner city suburbs

This old terrace is now a boutique hotel - one
of many in these inner city suburbs

Colourful!
