Ararat and Ballarat

On our way to the wine country in the Yarra Valley we passed through some beautiful western Victorian countryside and some very interesting and historical towns.

Ararat - Australia's Biggest Loser target town:

Ararat Town Hall and gardens
A beautiful town oozing charm with its grape-vine draped shop awnings, historic buildings and immaculate gardens and parks

and Ballarat - a town with a colourful history linked to the discovery of gold in Australia in the 1850's.

The Welcome Nugget found by a company of Cornish miners at Bakery Hill, 9th June,1858.
Weight 2217 ounces

The museum has excellent displays, paintings, etchings and artefacts relating to the gold era in Ballarat.
