An enforced rest this morning - it rained!!!
By mid-morning the clouds and rain disappeared and the sun reappeared making it another perfect beach day. We headed off to sun ourselves on Fort DeRussy Beach today, the beach closest to our accommodation. It is really lovely - big and not as busy as Waikiki. Flanked by Fort DeRussy Park it offers beautiful grassed areas and gardens as an alternative to the sand for beach-goers and picnickers. The beautiful Hilton Hawaiian Village and Hale Koa Hotel sits at one end of the beach, with the lovely Outrigger Reef on the Beach at the other end.

On our way to the beach we called in and had a look through the U.S. Army Museum which impressed us very much - a "must do" when you are in Honolulu. Housed in historic Battery Randolph, Fort DeRussy it is open Tuesday- Saturday 9am-5pm and is free admission. The museum covers early Hawaiian warfare right through to Vietnam. Interesting information, displays, artefacts and photographs are all presented in the perfect setting- the historic battery.
"Aloha and Welcome to a most unusual glimpse into Hawai'i's past!
Helicopters, tanks, guns now silenced, and vacant bunkers welcome you to the U.S. Army Museum of Hawai'i. Once a bastion built to protect Hawai'i from invading forces, the structure now houses a Museum that tells the military story of Hawai'i, from ancient times to the Gulf War and the War in Iraq. Each of these hostilities is covered graphically in separate displays with photographs and sound effect creating a real "you were there" experience."
And so the sun sets on another perfect day and on our wonderful week in Honolulu. Kona bound tomorrow!
