We officially started our trek back north today. Think it's time to as it was freezing this morning! Loved my woolly Mother's Day slippers this morning - Pete read my mind!!! -no more cold feet for me! :)
We discovered the "modern" Echuca this morning hiding in Hare Street as we went to cross the bridge into NSW to explore Moama. A much bigger town than we originally thought with all the modern shops and amenities. Certainly coming back to these lovely twin towns!
Moama's Sunday Markets were in full swing with everyone out enjoying the sunshine and the crisp air. Pete was keen to have a look at the 36 hole Rich River Golf Club that is in Moama and it didn't disappoint! Beautiful course! That's been put on his "To Play" list for our next trip! A quick look at "Moana Beach" gave us a great view of the Echuca Wharf and the bridge spanning the Murray and connecting the twin towns.
Then it was onto the Murray Valley Highway from another lovely scenic day of road tripping. We passed through the lovely towns of Nathalia, Strathmerton, Yaraweyah, Cobram, the twin towns of Yarrawonga and Mulwala and historic Rutherglen, finally finishing our day nestled on the shores of Lake Hume near Albury. Very picturesque! Lovely countryside, lush with lots of orchards, sheep and cattle.... and I forgot, more vineyards!- they are very beautiful at the moment with their leaves hued with autumn colours.
Heard on the news tonight that Falls Creek had their first fall of snow today - only an hour as the crow flies from where we are! No wonder it is chilly!!! Glad I've got my slippers!

Lovely Lake Mulwala and surrounding parklands
The mighty Murray pours into the huge man-made lake at Yarrawonga-Mulwala and then exits again to continue its
long journey to the sea
The Yarrawonga weir is the farthest downstream obstruction across the Murray that does not have a navigation lock through it. When full, the lake is 124.9 metres above sea level. The weir is 1992 kilometres upstream from the Murray Mouth.
Lake Mulwala is a renowned fishery for the native Murray Cod and is one of the few places where this Australian native freshwater fish is still reasonably common."

The Paradise Queen out for a Sunday afternoon paddlesteam on the lake |
|
The east end of the lake is an amazing scene of the remnants of the flooded forests |
|
The road bridge across the lake was built before the lake was filled, commenced in 1917 and completed in 1924. It replaced an earlier wooden bridge built in 1889-1891. The bridge was started from both ends, each by the respective state government. Unfortunately, they didn't coordinate their efforts, and the bridge has a dip and a bend in the middle to make the two ends meet. :) :)lol |

Driving around the east end of the lake we got a closer look at the amazing water forest - spectacular! |
