Quick decision - gone overseas to the amazing Kangaroo Island!

This morning we headed out of Victor Harbor bound for McLarenvale - somewhere along the way we hopped over to Kangaroo Island!

We didn't plan on doing KI (already picked up the locals terminology!) this trip but as the coast road to McLarenvale took us past the Cape Jervis turnoff we decided to duck down and have a look at the Cape as it was only a 10km detour. Next we knew we were on the Sealink Ferry and heading for KI!

The drive today was really pretty. We stopped at The Bluff as we left Victor H -  fantastic looking back over Encounter Bay with everything glistening in the sun! 30 degrees today!!! Amazing weather!
It was then off through the rolling hills, splashed with pine tree windbreaks and forests, and pockets of bush littered with grass trees, finally pulling up at the Ferry Wharf at Cape Jervis to watch the Kangaroo Island ferry load its belly with an assortment of vehicles and glide off across the Backstairs Passage to KI. A visit to the terminal and a quick change of plans saw us with tickets for the next ferry. We were off overseas! :)

It was perfect weather today so it was lovely on the top deck of the ferry watching Cape Jervis bid us goodbye and Penneshaw on KI's Dudley Peninsular welcome us!

The Bluff (Rosetta Head), Victor Harbor
The view from The Bluff over Encounter Bay and her lovely shores
Looking across to Wright Island and Granite Island
Glittering!

Petrel Cove and coastline on the Southern Ocean side of The Bluff
Wow!

Our first glimpse of Kangaroo Island as we came over the Hill to descend to Cape Jervis
Spectacular view!!!
The green grassed hills roll down to the sea - gone are the rugged cliffs!
Awesome!
This is all we came to do - see Cape Jervis and Kangaroo Island!
We were lucky enough to see the ferry loading ready to head off to KI!
Looks pretty good!!! Hmmmm...........??

Come on!!!........
Next thing we knew we had this! :)
Nothing like a spur of the moment decision!
Overseas we go! :)
How the coastline has changed!!

Great view as Cape Jervis bids us farewell.

Starfish Hill Wind Farm and Cape Jervis Lighthouse complete a great scene!

Beautiful!
Leaving the mainland - the lovely rolling hills run down to the sea
Approaching Penneshaw, Kangaroo Island

Hog Bay once known as Freshwater Bay
Think I would have stuck with "Freshwater" lol
It was called Hog Bay because Flinders let some pigs loose on shore here

Nice view of Hog Bay Beach from the MH
Afternoon tea time looking out over the backyard
The mainland from KI - looked amazing with the changing shapes as the sun went down

There once was a big Whaling Station near Fenchman's Rock These beautiful harmless creatures were the target!!
Unfortunately they decimated their numbers!
Once there were many but now there are few that cruise these waters!
Interesting looking fellow!
Hog Bay Beach
Walking material! :)
and
an important area..........................

At the end of Hog Bay Beach, under the white dome on Frenchman's Rock
is the historical graffiti written by Baudin's crew
Unusual razor sharp rocks

A stroll along the beach at sunset - lovely!

The area of Hog Bay Beach where the Little Penguins waddle in to get to their burrows.
There is only a small population here - around 40 Little Penguins call Hog Bay home
The green viewing platform overlooks the rookery.

I'm not home yet - wait until dark!
