So we've headed further inland from volcanic Mt Gambier to the very fertile farming lands of South Australia. Very flat and have seen lots of sheep! and then the vineyards! Lovely Penola and Coonawarra!
PENOLA
Loved Penola and its historic charm! You can see they are very, very proud of their heritage! Many of the historic buildings and homes are National Trust buildings. The town is immaculate and all the heritage buildings have information plaques outside them - the Town Heritage Walk is very interesting and informative. The buildings and homes all made good use of the local limestone which give the town great character. Also very appealing cafes, galleries and shops and boutiques !
A popular place to call home for artists, wine makers and other creative types. Poets John Shaw Neilson, Adam Linsey Gordon and Will Ogilvie gained inspiration here, along with St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, who co-founded the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph with Father Julian Tenison Woods.

COONAWARRA
Several minutes down the road from Penola is the Coonawarra wine region begun by Scottish pastoralist John Riddoch. Taking its name from the Aboriginal word "honeysuckle", Coonawarra's famous strip of rich, red terra rossa soil sitting atop deep lime stone beds has given rise to the world famous Cabernet Sauvignon that has become the areas flagship. There are many cellar doors along the strip all within 10 minutes of each other. We enjoyed a tasting at Wynn's Coonawarra Estate, the oldest winery and "the Estate that made Coonawarra famous".
